Author Interview: Karen Smith

I'd like to welcome Karen Smith to The Writing World. I must say that I love reading all the different answers to the interview questions. Thank you so much Karen for taking a moment to answer them.

Information about the Author: Karen is an award-winning best-selling author has sold 75 books since 1991 and has published with Silhouette, Harlequin, Kensington and Meteor/Kismet. The Writing World is completely amazed with Karen's dedication.

Interview:

1. Please tell the readers a bit more about you.

I've been published for twenty years, averaging 3 to 4 books a year. I was an English teacher turned mom and home decorator when back surgery put me flat for four years. During that time I began writing as a creative and emotional outlet. After writing for six years and finishing 13 manuscripts, I sold two books in a week to two different publishers. Since then I've been writing full time and rarely take a break. This past year I became involved in indie publishing. I've e-pubbed back list titles as well as new originals. I have one foot in indie publishing and one foot in traditional publishing. I like both. In my spare time I spend time with family as well as my two cats. My favorite hobbies are gardening and cooking.

2. What types of books do you write?

I have mostly written romance and women's fiction. But now I'm delving into mystery.

3. Who's your main audience?

My main audience is women who enjoy a love story which includes family relationships, too.

4. When it comes to writing- what are your strong points? What are your weaknesses?

My strongest writing talent is the ability to write with emotion. That's what usually propels my conflicts. My weakness is difficulty writing comedy. I can write warm humor but being able to write laugh-out-loud scenes is a talent I wish I possessed.

5. What do you think of this term- Writer's Block? How do you overcome it?

I'm not sure I believe in "writer's block." Many emotions and life circumstances can inhibit a writer's ability to concentrate or can damper a creative spirit. But writing as a vocation, a career or as a job is about putting words on paper or the computer or in my case on tape whether they're perfect or not. I overcome getting stuck by changing scenes, changing characters' point of views, changing my physical landscape, playing music or taking a shower or a walk and just letting my mind wander. But to me that isn't writer's block. It's just a time out to determine where my writing is going next.

6. How many books have you written?
Probably around 85.

7. How many are published?
79 are published.

8. Are you self published or traditionally published?
I'm both traditionally and self published.

9. What's the hardest part of the writing process for you?

The hardest part of the process now is promotion.  It can easily suck energy and hours from my writing time.

10. What type of books do you enjoy reading?
I read mostly suspense.

11. Who's your favorite Author?
Never just one! But if I have to choose I'd say Harlen Coben.

12. What's your all time favorite book?
The Flame And The Flower

Thanks again, Karen. It was a pleasure having you here on The Writing World.
