Interview with Brandi Kennedy

Welcome to The Writing world. We have Brandi Kennedy with us today for an interview.

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

I’m a regular east Tennessee girl these days, though I’m a transplant from central Florida. I’ve loved books and stories all my life, so it’s refreshing to have been able to make that love such a big part of who I am now.

What do you do when you are not writing?

I read (ravenously), I sing (terribly), and I knit or crochet (occasionally). For the most part, when I’m not writing I’m spending time with my girls and their dad, walking our crazy puppy -- or honestly, wishing that I was writing. I’ve found that now I’ve given my characters free reign to come and be written, they pester me almost constantly, wanting to be told. Once one moves to the side, another moves to the forefront almost immediately, and sometimes they’re standing in line, all planned out and waiting their turns.

When did you first start writing and when did you finish your first book?

I have been writing since I was a young child, but I didn’t actually finish my first novel, ‘To Love A Selkie’ until December 2012. It was published that same month, but will be released sometime in the summer or fall of 2013 as a boxed set with a part two, ‘To Become A Selkie’.

How did you choose the genre you write in?
I’m not sure I’ve chosen, really. ‘To Love A Selkie’ gives the impression of romantic tragedy with a twist of fantasy, but ‘To Become A Selkie’ brings it more fully into the romantic fantasy area. But then, ‘Fat Chance,’ ‘Prescription For Love’ and the rest of the Kingsley series are pretty strictly contemporary romance. I’d like to eventually play with things in the paranormal genre also. What can I say? I’m an adventurer.

Where do you get your ideas?
They spring out of my daily life. With ‘Selkie’, I just wanted to play with the old selkie legends. I love the stories, tragic though they are, and then I just couldn’t stick with it as it was. I needed more for Annie and Malik than what the old legends offered them, so part two is my personal extension of that. With ‘Fat Chance’ I was able to write from my heart and from my real life experiences. It was a really big experience for me, and I grew myself while Cass came into being. I think most of my books will be like that, simply because they must be, some extension of who I am as a person showing in my work as an author.

How do you market your work? What avenues have you found to work best for your genre?

Well, I’m active on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/AuthorBrandiKennedy), I’m pretty regular on my blog (http://authorbrandikennedy.blogspot.com/) and I use Twitter (https://twitter.com/BrandiKennedy84) sporadically. I’m learning it. I’m also on Goodreads (http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/6861198.Brandi_Kennedy) and of course, there’s the Amazon author page (http://www.amazon.com/Brandi-Kennedy/e/B00AQIJJ5S).

Can you tell us about your upcoming book?

Well, there are two actually, and I’m hosting a race on my blog (http://authorbrandikennedy.blogspot.com/2013/04/hard-at-work.html?zx=4ee929aa46896d30) where people can vote on which book they’d rather see come out first. The first possibility is ‘Selkie,’ the “boxed set” book which will include ‘To Love A Selkie’ and “To Become A Selkie’ together. The second is called Fighting For Freedom, and I haven’t actually released a lot of information about that one yet, other than to say that it is intended to have quite a strong message.

Is there anything that you would like to say to your readers and fans?

Thanks for the support. To every one of you who spent the pennies to buy a book, thank you. To every one who took those few precious minutes to leave a review, thank you. And to those who reach out to me to tell me what my work has meant to them … thank you. Every one of you, I love you all.

My currently released titles are:

To Love A Selkie (December 2012), Fat Chance, Kingsley Series Book One (January 2013), Prescription For Love, Kingsley Series Book Two (April 2013)
